This term simply describes any plugin for a DAW that is an instrument.
Most of the standalone virtual instruments are designed for the VST programming interface. A lot of instruments, however, run in the Kontakt sampler. Some, if a correspondent license is available, do run in the free Kontakt Player.
VirtuaI instruments can be sample (recordings of real instruments) based or can be a software synthesizer (that generates sounds from formulas).
